What Are Metabolic Studies?
Metabolic studies are a set of laboratory tests designed to assess how the metabolism of the human body works. They make it possible to detect abnormalities in the processing of nutrients, hormonal balance and the functioning of the organs responsible for metabolism.
These tests are especially useful for diagnosing and monitoring conditions such as diabetes, metabolic syndrome, thyroid disorders and dyslipidaemias.
What Do Metabolic Studies Include?
Glucose Profile
It includes the determination of fasting glucose, glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) and the glucose tolerance curve. It allows diabetes, prediabetes and insulin resistance to be diagnosed, as well as monitored in patients who have already been diagnosed.
Lipid Profile
It measures the levels of total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol (good), LDL cholesterol (bad) and triglycerides. It is essential for assessing cardiovascular risk and detecting dyslipidaemias that require dietary or pharmacological treatment.
Thyroid Function
Determination of TSH, T3 and T4 to assess the functioning of the thyroid gland. It allows the diagnosis of hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism and other disorders that affect metabolism, weight and energy.
Liver and Kidney Function
Assessment of transaminases, bilirubin, creatinine, urea and uric acid to understand the condition of the liver and kidneys, key organs in metabolism and the elimination of toxins.
Minerals and Vitamins
Determination of iron, calcium, vitamin D, vitamin B12, folic acid and other micronutrients essential for correct metabolic function.
When Are They Recommended?
Metabolic studies are recommended as part of a preventive medical check-up, in patients who are overweight or obese, in people with a family history of diabetes or cardiovascular disease, and for monitoring patients with already diagnosed metabolic disorders.
Preparation
To obtain reliable results, fasting for 10 to 12 hours is generally required. Your doctor will give you the specific instructions according to the tests requested.
